ABOUT US

MedSpanish Mission

1) To establish Medical Spanish as an essential skill for all health care providers in the United States, and to provide an excellent training environment to develop this skill. The MedSpanish program is open to all health care workers and students.

2) To develop excellent international health and international medicine experiences for physicians from the United States and Canada.

The MedSpanish parent program, PACEMD (www.pacemd.org) is an innovative international program that fosters emergency medicine leadership in the Americas among physicians, nurses, and emergency medical technicians, and serves as a mechanism for communication and collaboration among federal, state, and local health authorities, through the support of activities and exchanges within emergency medicine programs. Edit Text

The program provides electives for residents and fellows.  We are one of the only clinically based total immersion programs in Spanish!  We are strongly affiliated with the University of Guanajuato, the Red Cross and the Health Ministry of the State of Guanajuato. Our residents are typically primary care (Internal Medicine, Pediatrics, Internal Medicine and Family Practice) and emergency medicine. Our program Director, Dr. Haywood Hall, is the American College of Emergency Physician´s Ambassador to Mexico.

The program provides experiences in:

1) International medicine and international health: Exposure to a completely different health care system provides perspective and context for our work back home.

2) Medical Spanish: How to communicate with a Spanish speaking patient in non-technical terms

3) Cultural literacy: Understanding that different cultural norms exist  in Mexican and Latin cultures, and fostering a better understanding of the cultural aspects of health care.

We do not provide "first world" clinical training, but may provide a better understanding of health care delivery in a less medico-legal environment.  A clinical lesson in itself.
