The numbers are astonishing! In the past decade, the Latino population has continued to surge, and has increased 60 percent to reach an estimated 35 million. Not only are Latinos now the largest ethnic minority in the United States, they are also the fastest growing, with an annual increase of over two per cent. In California, long the epicenter of the Latino world in the United States, the population will double by 2025.

What does this mean to the aspiring or currently practicing medical professional? It means that now more than ever, being able to communicate in Spanish will make the crucial difference in communicating with patients who may have Spanish as their sole or primary language. It is not just a matter of socializing with patients, either. In an emergency setting, being able to quickly determine a patient's symptoms accurately can mean the difference between life and death.
